Organisation of Classes

New Entrant five year olds enter school into a class for New Entrants.  It is intended that they stay in that room and with that teacher until the end of the school year but this does depend on the number and pattern of enrolments during the year.

Children who start in the first term of the year move into a Year 2 class at the end of the year.  Children with birthdays in April and May are reviewed at the end of the year and if it is considered in their best interests that they go to a Year 2 class for the next year, this is discussed with parents before a final decision is made.

Children starting in the second half of the year are classified as Year 0 for that year and will be in Year 1 the following year, except in exceptional circumstances.

We endeavour to operate Year 1 to 4 classes as separate classes but numbers often dictate that we have a composite class as well.  A composite class, where possible will be within a Team.

Year 5 & 6, 7 & 8 classes are organized as composite classes covering 2 year levels.

The National Curriculum is the basic document for all New Zealand Schools to plan their learning and teaching programmes from.  Allowance is made within each class for children to work above or below their age and the curriculum level.  This means that many programmes in the classroom have a range of grouping and levels of work happening at the same time.
